CYCLE SAFARI TO ANTHEMOUNTA VALLEY
Cycling route: Vavdos to Galarinos-N.Raidestos-Thermi- Kalamaria
The safari to the Anthemounta Valley begins from Vavdos village (940 m a.s.l) from the slopes of Mount Vigla and ends in Thessaloniki (50 m a.s.l.). A unique cycling experience. The view as we start our descent into the valley below is breathtaking, while on the horizon parts of the Aegean sea are visible.
The valley is named after the ancient city of Anthemous, possibly located near the modern town of Galatista. Alongside the river Anthemounta remains of prehistoric settlements and of subsequent classical and Hellenistic periods have been discovered.
Today on the slopes of Mt.Vigla the abandoned mines of magnesite resemble a lunar landscape. Much of the valley is cultivated intensively but also livestock rearing is evident to large extent.
